Klondike --- X-Window solitaire

by John Heidemann <johnh@isi.edu>

Executive Summary

Klondike is a solitaire game for X11. It's strongly influenced by the user interface of Klondike for the Macintosh.

Features of klondike include:

  • time-based and Casino-style scoring
  • persistent high score list
  • on-line help

See the "Release Notes" menu item for details about what's new in Klondike.

Installation

The quick answer to installation is to type:

        ./configure
        make install

And then run /usr/local/games/klondike.

0. Install either wishx or the wish from Tk-4.1 (or later).

Standard Tcl/Tk is missing some features I need for Klondike,
so I originally wrote it using the extended features of TclX
        (using wishx).

Wishx was great, but not nearly as widely available as
standard Tcl/Tk. After some detours (including a perl-5-based
tclx emulator) tcl picked up some of the missing functions
and I put together the rest.
  1. Run "./configure". GNU configure will find wishx and build the

Makefile. By default klondike will install over the existing version, or in /usr/local/games.

Klondike has two parts: the executable program,
some data files, and some man pages.
Unfortunately there are many reasonable ways to install
these for games. We try the best from these choices:

        EXECUTABLE DATA MAN SYSTEM
        P/games P/lib/games P/man Linux/RedHat
        P/games P/share/games P/man FreeBSD
        P/games P/games/lib P/man SunOS
        P/bin P/lib P/man normal programs

(where P is first /usr/local and then /usr).

You can override installation in two ways, with --prefix=P
        (which sets P), or with --bindir=BD, --datadir=DD, and --mandir=MD.

2. Run "make install" to do the installation.

You may need to run this as root if you're writing
        to directories you don't own.

Installation if you have TclPro

Here's the text about how to build klondike using the TclPro tools (copied from their README and slightly reformatted):

UNIX Builds

In addition to the behavior from the original makefile, the new
        makefile contains the following targets:

        binary
Build the wrapped application by running TclPro
Compiler on the sources to generate .tbc
files, then running TclPro Wrapper to wrap the
application in a single binary, and then
placing it in a subdirectory called bin. The
executable result can be copied anywhere for
                        there.

        binary-install
Build the wrapped application (using the
"binary" target) then install it using the
rules in the original makefile. The
difference here is that it does not need a
data directory (the CARDS subdirectory is
wrapped and SCORES is located in the same
directory as the wrapped executable). This
target also installs the UNIX man pages.

To build the UNIX makefile, see the README.klondike file.

        Windows Builds
        --------------

For Windows, the makefile.vc provides only one target. When
you build the application using "nmake -f makefile.vc", the
wrapped executable is called "klondike.exe" and can be copied
to any location on any Windows NT/95/98 machine and run from
        its new location.

(Thanks for the patches to make these tools work, Scriptics!)

Updates

The latest version of klondike can be found at <http://www.isi.edu/~johnh/SOFTWARE/JACOBY/index.html>.

Various versions of this software have been tested by the author on SunOS 4.1, Solaris/x86 2.1, FreeBSD 2.0, and Linux/Slackware 2.x and 3.0.

Release Notes

This README file is $Id: README,v 1.14 1999/02/09 03:14:18 johnh Exp $.

Klondike 1.1---The first network release.

Klondike 1.4---Screen scaled for a 640x480 display, uses GNU configure.

Klondike 1.5---Pwishx and Tk-4.0 support added.

Klondike 1.6---Pwishx support removed; Tk-4.1 supported added. Accelerator support added to the menus.

Klondike 1.7---Installation and copyright cleaned-up.

Klondike 1.8 (April 1997)---Released as an RedHat Linux RPM and a FreeBSD package in addition to source. Works with Tcl-7.6, Tk-4.2, and mostly on PCs and Macs (although the installation may not). Menu accelerators supported.

Klondike 1.9 (February 1999)---After nearly two years some new code. Scriptics was interested in using klondike as an example for how to wrap programs. Thanks to them for contributing some code and advice about the changes in this version:

  • Klondike should now look better on non-Unix platforms, using native menubars and not using tk_bisque (ah...nostalgia).
  • Makefile/configure support for TclPro wrapping tools.
  • It now passes all of the TclPro debugger warnings.
