Keyano is a Musical Keyboard / Piano mapper for your PC Keyboard.

It has support for multiple modes so that various sounds can be used per key.

In Alphabet mode, when letters or numbers are pressed on the keyboard, that letter or number is said out loud as well as being displayed in a colorful graphical popup window. Alphabet_as_in mode is similar, however in this mode, the voice says "A as in Alpha" (for example).

Other modes are being developed and we currently have audio support for "notes" mode which is an early attempt to turn the PC keyboard into a Piano.

It has also been suggested, that with further development, keyano could have applications in the blind community. these options are currently be explored aswell.

Keyano is currently under heavy development. This project is still very young, so stay tuned for updates.

(I think aplay comes with alsa but you will still need to make sure it works with your window manager, sometimes aRtsd in KDE for example gets in the way)
