Some of the FS kernel driver are beta and writing to such mounted file systems is dangerous. Mounting a file system read only is recommendet unless you really need write access.
It doesn't mean that you will damage you're e.g. NTFS partition, I haven't seen any problems during my tests, so it seems to be useable. Just keep in mind that it could go wrong...
