Welcome to Sound Studio version @version@.
In a hurry? Type "./build dfltinst". You really should read the following first, though. Can't be bothered but want more control? Do "./build config", answer the questions, and "./build install"
This is a graphical sound sample editor, with recording and playback facilities and a built-in graphical mixer, for Linux and Solaris. Studio's home page is:
http://www.ee.leeds.ac.uk/homes/NJB/Software/Studio/screens.html
It makes extensive use of sox, the sound exchange program, by Lance Norskog. It is currently actively maintained by Chris Bagwell. See
http://home.sprynet.com/~cbagwell/sox.html
for details (nice one, Chris!). There is a version of sox supplied with this package for Linux elf platforms, but you are encouraged to use and maintain your own version, regarding this one as a fallback in case of problems. As of Studio version 1.0, a Sparc binary for Solaris is also provided under the same terms.
This is the second version, adapted for Tk4.0. To run this version a version of TCL 7.4 and Tk4.0 (or above) are required on your machine. It was tested under 8.0, and everything seems OK.
There is a version for TCL <= 7.3 and Tk <= 3.6 available. However, the program presented here has many added features over the old one, above those due to the better facilities of Tk4.0 and the command line loading explained below. The old version is also riddled with bugs. You'd be better off upgrading TCL/Tk, really!

To decompress use:
tar xvzf studio.tgz This contains
- executable TCL/tk scripts and templates
- source C code for studio components
- icons for use in studio.
- the on-line help text
- the manual in a variety of formats
- a compiled version of Sox for Linux and Solaris and its and manual page.
To compile studio type:
./build default
in the directory containing the studio files. You can then try out studio by issuing the command:
./studio
If you like what you see, try "./build install" as root. If you don't, try "./build config": this asks you questions instead of using the assumed defaults.
studio <filename>
Will load the file and play it. Thus it should be possible to configure a web browser to play sound files via. studio.
For more details you can access the online documentation, providing wish is installed, by issuing the command:
wish StudioHelp
from within the directory containing the studio files.
Patch history:
- got rid of silly bug in init.tk (didn't manifest itself on
Paul's or my machine!). Thanks to Jasom Adams. 7/11/96.
b, c: Sundry nicities (OK, I forgot to update this file! 0%
for software engineering!! Nick.)
- Addressed major bugs in 16-bit, high sample rate and stereo
files. Patched file.tk and playpanel.tk. 12/9/97.
Many thanks to franco@kairos.dibe.unige.it for sending me all the patches to correct my patches, and for contributing quite a few of his own! I have also hacked edit.tk to make editing work on zoomed windows with 16-bit samples. Still not sure it's bug-free. Changes to LOAD array (not yet documented) See Franco's comments (#FC). Thanks also to Rich Drews for patch in file.tk to fix avg bug.
Renamed to version 0.2.4 for sunsite compatibility 1st October
1997.
0.2.5: Another patch from franco to get the program to work with
newer versions of sox, which apparently don't like the
-e stat flag.
Fixed bugs to do with signed/unsigned tmp files.
User can save at different rate after recording
0.2.6: Fixed broken type/style flags in the effects package
so that it works when the loaded sample is something
other than unsigned bytes. 14th November 1997. NJB.
0.8.0: Fixed broken editing (incompatibility with dd reading
large block sizes from a pipe). Selected region now
retained after zoom out. Added magnification feature.
Added single-click adjustment of stereo sources to
set both channels equal. Tested with large (>80MB)
files. Made sure that all temp files are deleted, even
when the temporary directory isn't /tmp. 4th March 1998.
0.8.1: Thanks to Franco (again!): fixed silly bug involving
not having made certain files global in plot.tk, so
the sound file had to be in the same dir as studio
0.8.2: Fixed bug in help.tk with tcl/tl > 8.0: user manual now
works again. Also made "About" dialogue do something
sensible. You can now paste a selection into a new
file which isn't at the default sample rate, and it'll
work (but the new file must have the same rate as the
one from which it was copied/cut!) NJB: 27th March 1998.
0.9.1: thanks to Chel van Gennip, the use of dd for file
copying has been eliminated. Only head and tail get
used now. Added the "trim" effect (delete what /isn't/
selected) and the fade in/out code. Resulting program
is almost useful! Quite pleased with this one.
NJB: 5th January 1999.
1.0: Robin Whitehead's final year project integrated at
last! New features include:
* Solaris port
* VU meters with Peak Hold that really work!
* Red play-line which shows you where you are
in the file
* Support for the new features in Sox 12.15
Processor overhead of all the above is remarkably
small. NJB: 22nd July 1999.
1.0.1: Discovered and fixed a bug loading A-law files. Studio
was setting the style flag to 'a' rather than 'A'.
Options->set colours now works immediately on the floating
VU meter as well as the main window. Documentation
in PostScript and HTML now available again.
NJB: 13th August 1999.
1.0.2: Tim Powers at Red Hat takes over the Powertools work,
and send me a spec file. No code changes.
1.0.3: Fixed a bug with the fader: the C helper program didn't
understand a zero-length fade out, and threw a wobbler.
Major improvements to zoom in and out: it even works a bit
in conjunction with magnification now!
NJB 4th November 1999.
1.0.5: (and 1.0.4) Various patches to make the thing work with
more recent Soxes.
1.0.6: Working furiously through CVS. Changes include:
Added "Insert Silence" function
More patches from Chris to make things work with the new
new sox; Kevin's change to modernize the way wish is
invoked.
