music_command is licensed under the GPL, see LICENSE for more details.

music_command lets you change track or toggle playing state in your current running music/video player. e.g. music_command --next will skip to the next song in your current media player. The following music players are supported: banshee
beep-media-player (dbus version, get it from http://bmpx.beep-media-player.org/site/Downloads, there is a repository with ubuntu packages) muine
rhythmbox
amarok (Untested! Please report bugs!)
beep-media-player (old version)
totem
xmms2 (Untested! I think it works for Listen as it just checks to see if xmms2d is running, please report bugs!) xmms
mpc

If more than one music player is started the requested action will ocurre to the first music play on the above-mentioned list.
