This is a cablecrypt decoder for linux supporting these chips:
Brooktree BT878
Brooktree BT879
Brooktree BT848A
The decoder has been tested on a Hauppauge WinTV-PCI (BT878).
CableTV has now MMX support, so you maybe need a MMX capable processor. But I think with pre MMX processors, watching isn't much fun ;-)
You MUST have compiled kernel support for bttv cards or get the newest bttv drivers from here: http://www.strusel007.de/linux/bttv/. There is only support for PAL, because we do not have NTSC here. So it's very hard to implement this. Maybe we get some support.
To run the program you must be root, otherwise it bails out with an error. This version has reported to work perfect with many cable operators all across europe and around the world.

You have to paste this to your /etc/X11/XF86Config or
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
cabletv.sample ... sample channel configuration (modify and copy it
to ~/.cabletv)
lircrc.sample ... sample config for lirc (copy it to ~/.lircrc)

norm = pal, ntsc, secam (only pal supported yet)
source = television (where else should you get your signal)
- Description
First scroll the image down and stop at a position where you can see exactly one line of the vertical sync at the top of the image (maybe 2-4 lines, but look at the counter).
Then move the image to left or right as slow as possible. You have to look at the titlebar to see how far you are away from the perfect locking position, this is 0 (should count slowly from e.g. -60 upwards).
If the number in the console is between -2 and 2 (ideally 0) press L (locking). Now the image should be locked.
