INSTALLATION

Just run ./install, or check ./install --help for options. You can uninstall with ./uninstall, provided the file installed is still present. If it is not, you can specify the same options you gave to install (except --axel=...) to make it work.

BACKGROUNDS

The developer of axel, Wilmer van der Gaast, is a close friend of mine. This being so, I worked with axel from very early versions. axel matured from a tiny rebellion, haunted by segmentation faults in beta, to a real alternative to current download accelerators.

When axel reached the age of 1.0, I had a major problem with my browser. It did not download files, instead it crashed. I used axel before and so it was the logical choice to do my downloading. But axel did its job too well. At times it happened that all other users of my home network could not download at speeds becoming of a high class network like mine.

I found that axel could 'cap' a download. No problem. Or was there? I was used to just open another screen and start another download as I pleased. I could not do that anymore, since it would ruin my maximum speed setting. Solution: serialize the process.

This led to another problem. I had to check every so often to see if a certain download was done. Not liking this, I mailed Wilmer if he could do something about it by making axel use queues. He was rather busy at that time and he pointed out that it would not have high priority, since it was not a core feature of axel. As usual, he was right.

So I started thinking of writing my own queue manager. It occurred to me that it was in fact a launcher and that it could easily be done in a shell script. And behold, axelq has found its way to the open source community.
