Executive Summary
Dontspace is a solitaire game for X11. It's modeled after the game ``Free Space'' distributed with Microsoft Windows NT. Dontspace emphasizes a clean user interface and point-based scoring.
See the ``Release Notes'' menu item for details about what's new in this version of Dontspace.
Installation
The quick answer to installation is to type:
./configure
make install
And then run /usr/local/games/dontspace.
0. Install an adequate version of wish.
Dontspace requires either Tk-4.1 (or later)
or wishx, the extended-tcl version of wish.
Tcl, tk and tclX are quite portable and should run on most
POSIX/X11R4 or better systems. It has been tested by the
author on SunOS 4.1, Solaris/x86 2.1, FreeBSD 2.0,
and Linux/Slackware 2.x at various times.
- Run "./configure". GNU configure will find wishx and build the
Makefile. By default dontspace will install over the existing version, or in /usr/local/games.
Dontspace has two parts: the executable program,
some data files, and some man pages.
Unfortunately there are many reasonable ways to install
these for games. We try the best from these choices:
EXECUTABLE DATA MAN SYSTEM
P/games P/lib/games P/man Linux/RedHat
P/games P/share/games P/man FreeBSD
P/games P/games/lib P/man SunOS
P/bin P/lib P/man normal programs
(where P is first /usr/local and then /usr).
You can override installation in two ways, with --prefix=P
(which sets P), or with --bindir=BD, --datadir=DD, and --mandir=MD.
2. Run "make install" to do the installation.
You may need to run this as root if you're writing
to directories you don't own.
Updates
The latest version of dontspace can be found at <http://www.isi.edu/~johnh/SOFTWARE/JACOBY>.
Jacoby---the big picture
Dontspace is intended to be one of a family of Tk-based solitaire games. It's a descendent of Klondike; eventually these two programs (and others) will share the same source code base.
The name for this family of programs is "Jacoby" after Oswald Jacoby, a noted bridge player.
Dontspace---the hidden agenda
Unix has a number of strong technical features, however other operating systems have a strong market share. Since operating systems vendors have begun to ship games as a standard part of their operating systems (and perhaps as the most enjoyed part, at that), dontspace, together with klondike and xbomb, represent my attempt to keep Unix feature-for-feature equivalent to other operating systems.
Release Notes
Dontspace 1.0---The first network release.
Dontspace 1.1---Screen scaled slightly for a 640x480 display. Configuration now uses GNU configure.
Dontspace 1.2---updated for Tk-4.1 (now wishx-independent); both source and RPMs distributed.
