################################ PyJflash 1.2.1 ################################

=== Requirements =============================================================== The source needs wxPython 2.5.5 and python 2.3 or above. wxPython can be downloaded from www.wxpython.org, and python from www.python.org.

Chances are high that if using a linux or unix variant, you already have python installed and you only need wxPython. However, if using python 2.3, CJKCodecs is also required from http://cjkpython.i18n.org/.

=== Installation Instructions ================================================== 1. Untar the PyJflash-version-src.tar.gz to a suitable location. 2. cd to the directory where you extracted it. 3. Type "python PyJflash.py" to run.

It is also possible to install using python distutils "python setup.py install".

=== Usage ====================================================================== Please see the website at pyjflash.berlios.de or open the PyJflash/Documentation/index.html file with a web browser.

=== License ==================================================================== PyJflash/PyJEdit under the GNU GPL, but the datafiles are under their own license. See PyJflash/Documentation/License.html for more info.

=== WARNING! =================================================================== Do not use this program to overwrite any of your files without first backing up ALL of the data you plan to work on! This program, due to more information being available in some formats than others, is KNOWN TO LOSE some information, such as comments and dates. Please see PyJflash/Documentation/Formats.html for more information.

=== TODO =======================================================================

  • Better formatting for popups
  • Add option to use Pinyin instead of Japanese
  • Add nanori support to Kanjidic loading
  • Add different encodings to Kanjidic loader
  • Autodetect formats/encodings using regular expressions
  • A Kanji flashcard program
  • Add translations to other languages
  • Add split into multiple files to file export dialog
  • A mass operation program so you can combine/convert lots of files
  • Better popup wrap
  • Stardict support
  • Make colours more configurable
  • Make some better icons
  • Fix GTK-QT style engine (has background colour problems)
  • JMDict and Kanjidic2 XML support
  • A save/load progress dialog
  • Add support for comments/examples
  • A website that doesn't rely on frames

=== Miscellaneous Notes ======================================================== While not required, psyco can increase the program's performance a little bit on windows and significantly on linux. Install psyco if you want to experiment or just want better performance from http://psyco.sourceforge.net/.

I don't have a mac and don't have access to one but if you have one and can get it working, I'd really like to know! Please contact me at frozball@users.berlios.de.

PyJflash may have jagged fonts on Windows without Japanese support and font smoothing enabled. Please see
http://newton.uor.edu/Departments&Programs/AsianStudiesDept/Language/ for more information.

It is recommended to disable the GTK-QT style engine on linux because it doesn't allow setting the background colours of windows. I'd like to come back to this later and make the background colours etc more configurable.

=== Bugs/Feature Requests: ===================================================== If you know of any bugs, please fill out a bug report at http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?group_id=3691 and I'll try to fix any as soon as possible. If you have any feature requests, they would be also very welcome at http://developer.berlios.de/feature/?group_id=3691.

=== Thanks to: ================================================================= - Jim Breen and the contributors listed at http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/groups/edrdg/licence.html for Kanjidic and Japanese computing on western computers in general - JGram for the JLPT grammar
- Thierry Bezecourt for the JLPT vocabulary - The makers of the mona font at http://monafont.sourceforge.net/index-e.html - The makers of wxpython, wxwidgets and python for writing just a great gui library and language respectively
- And anyone that I've forgotten!
