This README describes a procedure to automatically start the monit system monitor software upon boot for Mac OS X.
- Files
Startup Script./monit Sample Configuration file
./monitrc New (10.3+) Startup Plist
./monit.plist Startup Parameter file
./StartupParameters.plist
- Instructions
o pre OS X v10.3:- Create a StartupItems directory called "monit"
sudo mkdir -p /Library/StartupItems/monit
- Move the files in this archive to the startup directory
sudo mv -i -- /Library/StartupItems/monit
- Add the line "MONIT=-YES-" to /etc/hostconfig
sudo echo "MONIT=-YES-" >> /etc/hostconfig o post OS X v10.3:
- Move the monit.plist file in this archive to the startup directory
sudo mv -i -- monit.plist /etc/mach_init.d/ o Copy the sample configuration file to /etc/ and edit
sudo cp -i -- /Library/StartupItems/monit/monitrc /etc/ sudo vi /etc/monitrc o Ensure permissions are correct for the configuration file
sudo chmod 0700 /etc/monitrc sudo chown root:admin /etc/monitrc o Start the monit service manually, or reboot. Examples:
- /usr/local/bin/monit
- /usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d/monit.plist
- sudo /Library/StartupItems/monit/monit start
- sync && reboot
o Test the monit service
sudo monit status
- Add the line "MONIT=-YES-" to /etc/hostconfig
- Create a StartupItems directory called "monit"
- Notes
o enable and test any mail server specified in the configuration o If using OS X Server, be aware that there is a similar service to monit called "WatchDog" - it also uses the Order parameter of Late o try out m/monit if you have monit managing more than one system o if monitoring the checksum property, be sure to verify and update the sums immediately after softwareupdate(8) is run o generate pid files for any monitored service that don't generate one themselves (e.g., sshd), edit the startup wrapper if necessary o short list of pid-files that often exist, under /var/run:automount.pid configd.pid cron.pid diskarbitrationd.pid httpd.pid lockd.pid lookupd.pid mDNSResponder.pid natd.pid named.pid netinfo_local.pid ntpd.pid racoon.pid servermgrd.pid syslog.pid vpnd-L2TP.pid watchdog.pid xinetd.pid o if you are not comfortable editing the firewall configuration by hand then carefully consider whether or not you should enable web access at all o fully RTFM by reading the manual, online docs, and mail archives before reporting problems or asking for help. The monit project's lists are not the place to ask for help with general Mac OS X issues.
